A young woman stands before the most powerful king in the world. One wrong word, and she dies. One silent moment, and her people die. She has no army. She has no political power. She has only her faith and her courage.
This is the story of Esther. And it is a story for you today.
You may feel small. You may feel that your voice does not matter. You may feel that the problems around you are too big and you are too weak. Esther felt the same way. But God placed her in that exact moment for a reason. And He has placed you in your moment for a reason too.
The Setting: A People in Danger
Esther was a young Jewish woman living in Persia, far from her homeland. Her parents had died. Her older cousin Mordecai raised her like his own daughter. Through circumstances only God could arrange, Esther became queen of Persia.
But there was a problem. A wicked man named Haman hated the Jewish people. He convinced King Ahasuerus to sign a law that would kill every Jew in the empire on a specific day. Men, women, and children. All would die.
Mordecai heard about this evil plan. He tore his clothes in grief. He sent a message to Esther: she must go to the king and beg for her people.
But there was a serious problem. Persian law said no one could approach the king without being called. Not even the queen. The punishment was death. Esther had not been called to the king for thirty days.
Esther sent her fear back to Mordecai. And then Mordecai sent her one of the most powerful sentences in all of Scripture.
The Words That Changed Everything
“For if you remain completely silent at this time, relief and deliverance will arise for the Jews from another place, but you and your father’s house will perish. Yet who knows whether you have come to the kingdom for such a time as this?” (Esther 4:14, NKJV)
Read those words slowly. Read them again.
Mordecai was telling Esther a hard truth. God will save His people. God’s plan will not fail. But you, Esther, must choose. Will you be part of what God is doing? Or will you hide?
This is the truth for you too. God’s work will continue with or without you. But He is inviting you into it. He has placed you exactly where you are for a reason.
You are not in your family by accident. You are not in your job by accident. You are not in your village or your city by accident. God has placed you there “for such a time as this.”
The Reformer Martin Luther understood this kind of moment. When he was called to stand before powerful leaders and deny his faith in Christ, he refused. He said,
“My conscience is captive to the Word of God.”
Luther knew that God had placed him in that exact moment. He could not run away from it.
Esther’s Brave Decision
Esther made her choice. She told Mordecai to gather all the Jews to fast and pray for three days. She and her servants would do the same. Then she said:
“And so I will go to the king, which is against the law; and if I perish, I perish!” (Esther 4:16, NKJV)
“If I perish, I perish.”
These are not the words of someone who feels no fear. Esther was afraid. She knew she might die. But she chose to act anyway. That is the meaning of true courage. Courage is not the absence of fear. Courage is moving forward in faith even when you are afraid.

Esther did not rush in by her own strength. She prepared with prayer and fasting. She invited her community to seek God with her. She knew that her courage had to come from God, not from herself.
Think of a Cambodian young woman who learns that her community is being cheated by powerful men. The leaders are corrupt. Her family is suffering. Her neighbors are losing their land. She is young. She is poor. She has no influence. But she knows the truth.
She prays for three days. She asks her church to pray with her. Then she goes to the meeting where the leaders gather. Her voice shakes. Her hands tremble. But she speaks the truth. She tells the leaders what is happening. She speaks for her people.
Will she succeed? She does not know. But she goes anyway. “If I perish, I perish.” This is the heart of Esther. This is the heart God is building in you.
Trusting the God Who Rules Kings
How could Esther approach a king who could kill her with a word? She trusted that God was bigger than any king.
“The king’s heart is in the hand of the Lord, like the rivers of water; He turns it wherever He wishes.” (Proverbs 21:1, NKJV)
This is one of the most powerful truths in Scripture. The king sits on a golden throne. He commands armies. He signs laws. He decides who lives and who dies. But his heart is in the hand of the Lord. God turns the king’s heart wherever He wishes, like a farmer directs water through a field.
You may look at the powerful people around you and feel afraid. Government leaders. Bosses. Wealthy landowners. Family members who control your life. They seem so strong. They seem unstoppable.
But their hearts are in God’s hand. God can turn them. God can soften them. God can change their minds in a moment.

When Esther approached the king, he was pleased to see her. He extended his golden scepter. He invited her to speak. The God who rules over kings had prepared the king’s heart for that very moment.
The preacher Charles Spurgeon understood this. He wrote,
“Visit many good books, but live in the Bible.”
Why? Because the Bible shows us a God who is bigger than every earthly power. When you live in Scripture, you see that God is on the throne above every throne.
God Is For You
Esther’s story leads to one great truth that we see clearly in the New Testament:
“What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?” (Romans 8:31, NKJV)
If God is for you, who can stand against you?
Not your fear. Not the powerful people in your life. Not the impossible problems you face. Not even death itself. If God is for you, no enemy can ultimately win.
This does not mean your life will be easy. Esther’s life was not easy. She faced real danger. She wept real tears. She felt real fear. But she was not alone. God was with her. God was for her. And God won the victory through her.
The same is true for you. God is not far away watching from a distance. He is for you. He is with you. He has placed you in this moment for a reason.
The German pastor Dietrich Bonhoeffer faced the evil of Hitler’s regime. He could have stayed silent and safe. But he chose to speak the truth. He paid with his life. Before he died, he wrote,
“Cheap grace is the grace we bestow on ourselves. Costly grace is the gospel which must be sought again and again.”
Bonhoeffer knew that following Christ would cost him everything. He went forward anyway, because he knew God was for him.
Live It Today
How do you live out the courage of Esther in your daily life? Here are four practical steps.
Recognize where God has placed you
Look at your life right now. Your family. Your workplace. Your school. Your church. Your village. You are not there by accident. God has placed you in that exact spot “for such a time as this.” Ask Him: what do You want me to do here?
Prepare your heart with prayer and fasting
Esther did not rush into action by her own strength. She prayed. She fasted. She asked others to pray with her. Before you face a hard situation, prepare your heart. Ask God for courage. Ask Him for wisdom. Ask trusted believers to pray with with you. Spiritual battles are won on your knees before they are won in your actions.
Speak truth even when you are afraid
Courage is not the absence of fear. Courage is doing the right thing even when you are afraid. There may be a truth you need to speak. A wrong you need to confront. A person you need to help. Do not wait until you feel brave. Move forward in faith, like Esther. “If I perish, I perish.”
Trust that God rules over every situation
The most powerful people in your life are not really in control. God is. Their hearts are in His hand. He can turn them. He can change them. He can use them for His purposes. Stop fearing people. Start trusting God.
A Word About Your Moment

You may not become a queen. You may never speak before kings. But God has placed you in your own moment. Your family needs you. Your church needs you. Your community needs you. God needs you to be faithful exactly where you are.
Do not waste your moment by hiding in fear. Do not waste your moment by saying you are too small or too weak. God did not place you here to hide. He placed you here to shine. He placed you here “for such a time as this.”
