Adoption: Welcomed into God’s Family

christian spiritual growth in a modern Cambodian urban setting

Everyone longs to belong, to find a place where they are fully known and deeply loved. For many in Cambodia, family is everything. It is where identity, security, and purpose are found. But what happens when you feel like an outsider, or when your family struggles? The Bible speaks of an even greater belonging, a divine invitation to become part of God’s own family through what we call adoption. It is a truth that changes everything about who you are and where you truly belong.

Theological Meaning

In Christian theology, adoption is God’s gracious act of making believers His children. Through Jesus Christ, we are brought into God’s family, receiving all the rights, privileges, and inheritance that belong to His true sons and daughters. This is not merely a legal status. It is a profound transformation where God, in His sovereign love, chooses us to be His own. It means we move from being strangers or even enemies of God to becoming His beloved children, sharing in the intimate relationship Jesus has with the Father. This gift comes not from our merit, but entirely from God’s unfailing grace and good pleasure. You can read more about how God changes your heart in our article on Regeneration.

What It Means for You

Imagine a child who has just lost their parents and have no other relatives or family. They might feel alone, without a clear future or a family name to carry. Then, a kind, loving family chooses to bring them into their home. They give them a new name, new clothes, and a place at their table. This child now has security, love, and a future. This is a glimpse of what spiritual adoption means for you.

When God adopts you, He gives you His family name. You are no longer an outsider. You are a son or a daughter of the King of Kings. This new identity means you have a Father who cares for you more deeply than any earthly parent. He provides for you, protects you, and guides you. Whether you are navigating the busy streets of Phnom Penh, working in the rice fields, or sharing a meal with your community, you carry the truth of your divine parentage. You are loved, you are valued, and you belong forever. This changes how you see yourself, giving you confidence and peace in every part of your life. This standing is made possible through Justification, where God declares you righteous through faith.

Reference Scriptures on Adoption

Ephesians 1:5

having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will,

God’s decision to adopt you was made long ago, even before you were born. It was His loving plan, a choice rooted in His own good will, not in anything you did or could do. You are not an accident. You are part of His eternal design. You can learn more about this in our study on Election.

Romans 8:15

For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.”

Before Christ, we lived in fear, like slaves. But now, through the Holy Spirit, you have been given a spirit of adoption. This means you can approach God not as a distant judge, but as Abba, Father, a tender, intimate name that shows deep love and trust. Fear is replaced with loving relationship.

Galatians 4:4-5

But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons.

Jesus came at the perfect time to rescue us from the law’s demands and sin’s power. His sacrifice made it possible for us to receive this incredible gift of adoption. You are adopted because Jesus paid the price, opening the way for you to become God’s child.

1 John 3:1

Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God! Therefore the world does not know us, because it did not know Him.

Stop and consider the immense love God has poured out on you! He calls you His child. The world might not understand this new identity, because it does not know God. But you know Him, and you are known by Him, a truth more precious than any earthly recognition.

Lessons from Great Evangelical Leaders, Preachers and Teachers of the Past

A.W. Tozer (1897-1963), an American pastor and author, often spoke about the deep longing of the human heart for God. He understood that true satisfaction comes from an intimate relationship with our Creator. Tozer’s insights into the pursuit of God resonate deeply with the concept of adoption. He taught that when we are adopted, we are brought into a relationship of deep affection, not just duty. He wrote:

God is a Person, and in the deep of His mighty heart there is a desire to be known and loved by you.

This highlights the Father’s desire for a personal, loving connection with each adopted child.

C.S. Lewis (1898-1963), a British writer and Christian apologist, brilliantly explained complex theological ideas through stories and essays. He often wrote about the transformation that occurs when someone comes to faith. In his work, Lewis emphasized that adoption is not merely a change in legal status, but a change in our very nature, making us more like Christ. He helped people see that God’s love in adoption makes us truly human, fulfilling our deepest purpose. His writings encourage us to embrace this new identity and live fully as God’s beloved children.

Live It Today

Embrace Your New Identity

Understand that you are no longer defined by your past, your mistakes, or what others say about you. Your primary identity is child of God. Live with the confidence and security that comes from knowing your Heavenly Father loves you unconditionally and has a purpose for your life. Let this truth shape your thoughts, words, and actions every day.

Walk in Freedom

Because you are adopted, you are free from the fear of punishment and the burden of trying to earn God's love. You no longer need to live in shame or anxiety. Instead, walk in the freedom that comes from grace. Approach God with boldness, knowing He welcomes you as His own. This freedom empowers you to serve Him out of love, not obligation.

Connect with Your Father

Just as a child spends time with their earthly parents, cultivate a deep, personal relationship with your Heavenly Father. Talk to Him through prayer, listen to Him through His Word, and obey His leading. Spend quiet moments with Him, sharing your joys and your struggles. The more you connect with Him, the more you will experience His love and guidance in your daily life.

Live as Family

As adopted children of God, we are also part of a larger spiritual family, the church. Connect with other believers in your community, treating them as brothers and sisters in Christ. Support one another, pray for one another, and encourage one another. Living in Christian community reflects the love and unity of God’s own family to the world around you. This journey of faith is not meant to be walked alone.
