Mary Magdalene: The Redeemed Witness

She had been broken. Seven demons once ruled her life. Then Jesus set her free, and she became the first person to see Him alive after the resurrection.

Mary Magdalene's story is not a side note in the Gospels. She stands at the center of one of the most important moments in human history. The risen Christ chose her, a woman with a painful past, to carry the greatest news the world has ever heard.

If you think your past disqualifies you from serving God, Mary Magdalene's life will change your mind.

Who Was Mary Magdalene?

A grounded illustration of the ancient town of Magdala on the shores of the Sea of Galilee, the home of Mary Magdalene.

Mary came from Magdala, a fishing town on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee. We do not know her family. We do not know if she was married. We do not know how old she was when she met Jesus.

What we do know is this: she suffered terribly before Christ found her.

Luke tells us plainly:

“Now it came to pass, afterward, that He went through every city and village, preaching and bringing the glad tidings of the kingdom of God. And the twelve were with Him, and certain women who had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities; Mary called Magdalene, out of whom had come seven demons.” (Luke 8:1-2, NKJV)

Seven demons. Think about what that means. Her mind was not her own. Her body was tormented. People in her town likely feared her or avoided her. She was a woman in chains no human could break.

Then Jesus walked into her life.

He cast out every demon. He healed every wound. He gave her back to herself.

And Mary did something powerful in response. She followed Him.

Mary Followed Jesus With Her Whole Life

Luke continues:

“And certain women who had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities… Mary called Magdalene… and many others who provided for Him from their substance.” (Luke 8:2-3, NKJV)

Mary did not just attend the meetings. She gave her money. She traveled with Jesus. She supported His ministry from her own resources. She was there in the dusty roads of Galilee. She was there in Jerusalem. She was there at the cross when most of the male disciples ran away.

The Puritan pastor Richard Baxter once wrote:

“A holy life is a voice; it speaks when the tongue is silent, and is either a constant attraction or a continual reproof.”

Mary's life was a voice. Her presence near Jesus said something her words could not. She had been a slave to darkness. Now she was a servant of the Light.

This is what real conversion looks like. It is not just feeling sorry for your sins. It is following Jesus with your time, your money, and your loyalty.

Ask yourself today: When Jesus healed you, what did you give back to Him?

She Stood at the Cross When Others Ran

When Jesus was arrested, His closest disciples scattered. Peter denied Him three times. The men who had walked with Him for three years disappeared into the shadows.

But Mary Magdalene stayed.

She watched Him die. She heard the nails. She saw the blood. She listened to the mockers. She did not run.

Why?

Because love that has been forgiven much loves much. Jesus had set her free from seven demons. She would not abandon Him in His worst hour.

This is a hard truth for many of us. We say we love Jesus when life is easy. But when following Him costs us something, do we stay?

The English reformer William Tyndale gave his life to translate the Bible into English. He was burned at the stake for it. Before he died, he prayed:

“Lord, open the King of England’s eyes.”

Tyndale understood what Mary understood. Some things are worth dying for. The truth of Christ is one of them.

The Garden Encounter

Mary Magdalene telling the disciples that she has seen the risen Lord, a foundational moment of faith and redemption.

After Jesus was buried, Mary came back to the tomb early Sunday morning. She came to anoint His body. She came in grief. She came expecting death.

What she found changed everything.

“But Mary stood outside by the tomb weeping, and as she wept she stooped down and looked into the tomb. And she saw two angels in white sitting, one at the head and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain. Then they said to her, ‘Woman, why are you weeping?’ She said to them, ‘Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid Him.’ Now when she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, and did not know that it was Jesus.” (John 20:11-14, NKJV)

She did not recognize Him. Her eyes were full of tears. Her heart was full of sorrow.

Then Jesus spoke one word. Her name.

“Jesus said to her, ‘Mary!’ She turned and said to Him, ‘Rabboni!’ (which is to say, Teacher).” (John 20:16, NKJV)

One word. Her name from His lips. And everything inside her woke up.

This is how Jesus meets His people. He calls us by name. He knows us. He does not see a crowd. He sees you.

The Welsh-born preacher Charles Spurgeon said this about being known by Christ:

“Visit many good books, but live in the Bible.”

When you live in the Bible, you will hear Jesus call your name too. Not with your ears. With your heart.

The First Witness of the Resurrection

Mark records this clearly:

“Now when He rose early on the first day of the week, He appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom He had cast seven demons.” (Mark 16:9, NKJV)

Read that again. The risen Christ appeared first to Mary Magdalene. Not to Peter. Not to John. Not to His mother. To Mary, the woman from Magdala who had once been bound by seven demons.

Why her?

Because God delights in lifting up the lowly. He chooses the broken to carry His glory. He picks the rejected to be His messengers. This is the pattern of the gospel from beginning to end.

Then Jesus gave her a mission.

“Jesus said to her, ‘Do not cling to Me, for I have not yet ascended to My Father; but go to My brethren and say to them, “I am ascending to My Father and your Father, and to My God and your God.”‘ Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples that she had seen the Lord, and that He had spoken these things to her.” (John 20:17-18, NKJV)

Mary became the first preacher of the resurrection. The first witness. The first evangelist of the new covenant. A woman with a past that most people would hide became the messenger of the greatest news ever told.

A Story From Cambodia

A woman in a modern Cambodian village sharing her testimony, reflecting the life-changing power of Jesus Christ in contemporary life.

There is a woman in a village near Battambang. For years, she was trapped in addiction and shame. Her family had given up on her. Her neighbors whispered about her. She believed her life was over.

Then a small group of believers came to her village. They told her about Jesus. They prayed for her. They did not look down on her.

Something broke in her heart. She gave her life to Christ.

The change was clear. She stopped drinking. She started working again. She began to care for her children with new strength. She was a different woman.

But she did not keep this to herself. She walked from house to house in her village. She told her story. She said, "Jesus saved me. He can save you too."

Many in her village laughed at her. Some called her crazy. But others listened. And one by one, women in that village began to come to Christ.

She was a Mary Magdalene. A redeemed witness. A woman whose past became the platform for her testimony.

This is what God does. He takes our worst chapters and turns them into the loudest sermons.

Live It Today

A woman in a modern home in Phnom Penh reading the Bible, illustrating the importance of seeking God's word daily.

Mary's story is not just history. It is a pattern for your life. Here is how to walk in her footsteps this week.

Bring Your Whole Past to Jesus

Mary did not hide her seven demons. The Gospel writers named them. Her story was public. She did not pretend she had always been good.

Stop hiding from God. He already knows everything. Confess what He already sees.

“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9, NKJV)

Follow Jesus With Your Resources

Mary supported Jesus from her own substance. She gave Him what she had.

What do you have? Money? Time? Skills? A home? A voice? Use it for Christ. Do not wait until you have more. Mary gave what she had, and it was enough.

Stay When Others Run

When following Jesus gets hard in your family or village, do not run. Stand at the cross. Be the one who stays when others leave.

The German pastor Dietrich Bonhoeffer, who was killed by the Nazis for his faith, wrote:

“Cheap grace is the grace we bestow on ourselves. Costly grace is the gospel which must be sought again and again.”

Costly grace stays at the cross. Cheap grace runs.

Listen for Jesus to Call Your Name

Mary did not recognize Jesus until He spoke her name. Slow down. Read Scripture. Pray. Wait for the moment when His voice reaches your heart.

He still calls people by name. He is calling you.

Tell Someone What Jesus Has Done

Mary ran to the disciples and said, "I have seen the Lord." She did not wait. She did not prepare a speech. She told them the truth she had just experienced.

This week, tell one person what Jesus has done in your life. Your family. A friend. A neighbor. Do not preach. Just tell.

The Witness Is You

Mary Magdalene was not a perfect woman. She was a forgiven woman. She was not a religious leader. She was a redeemed sinner. She was not chosen because she was strong. She was chosen because Jesus had made her free.

You are no different.

Your past does not disqualify you. Your weakness does not disqualify you. Your shame does not disqualify you. Jesus calls broken people and sends them out as His messengers. This is the pattern. This is the gospel.

The risen Christ stands before you today. He knows your name. He knows your story. He is ready to send you out as His witness.

Will you go?
