Walking through a rice field after a heavy rain requires careful steps.
One wrong move leads to a fall into the mud. Human life mirrors this walk. Many people rely on personal logic to find the way. This reliance often brings disappointment. God calls believers to a different path. Trusting your own heart feels natural until the path disappears under your feet. We must learn to abandon self-reliance and lean entirely on God.
The Failure of Self-Reliance
Your brain tries to solve every problem alone. This habit creates a heavy burden. Human understanding fails because people see only a small piece of the life journey. You see the immediate struggle. God sees the whole path from start to finish. Leaning on your own understanding resembles using a broken wooden staff while climbing a steep hill in the Cardamom Mountains. The staff looks strong but snaps under pressure.
Solomon provides the antidote to this struggle in the book of Proverbs. He directs our eyes away from ourselves and toward the Creator.
Trust in the LORD with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.
(Proverbs 3:5-6 NKJV)
Acknowledging God means giving Him control over every decision. Think about a farmer preparing his field in a rural province. He uses a wooden plow pulled by oxen. He trusts the rain will come. He knows his own strength fails to make the seeds grow. He relies on the Creator of the seasons. In the same way, you must rely on the Lord for every breath and every plan.
Humility Over Pride
Pride whispers a dangerous lie. Pride says your plan works best. This thought causes spiritual blindness. Thinking yourself wise leads to many mistakes. Following personal thoughts often leads to sin. The world praises self-confidence, but the Bible praises God-confidence.
Do not be wise in your own eyes; Fear the LORD and depart from evil. It will be health to your flesh, And strength to your bones.

Choosing personal righteousness over sin brings peace. Sin acts like a parasite. Sin drains life and joy. Obedience acts like clean water from a village well. Obedience refreshes the soul. A body feels strong when the spirit rests in God. Walking away from evil brings peace to the mind. This peace remains better than any medicine. Giving God the First Portion
Many people chase silver and gold. They think material wealth brings safety. Human understanding says: keep everything for yourself. This logic promises safety through money. Scripture says: give first. Prosperity in the Bible differs from worldly wealth. True wealth comes from a right relationship with the Lord.
Honor the LORD with your possessions, And with the firstfruits of all your increase; So your barns will be filled with plenty, And your vats will overflow with new wine.
(Proverbs 3:9-10 NKJV)
Placing God first in your finances shows total trust. If a fisherman on the Mekong River gives his first catch to the Lord, he proves his faith. He believes the Lord provides for the next day. This level of trust requires rejecting human fear. Seeking mere material gain leads to an empty heart. Seeking God’s glory leads to a full life. Farmers in the provinces understand this principle. Wisdom Beyond Human Sight
The wisdom of the world seems loud. People write many books about self-help. They say: believe in yourself. The Bible says: believe in the Lord. Choosing the Lord over yourself brings eternal rewards. This choice defines your character. This choice secures your future.
Reflect on the path before you. Does the path look rocky? Do the trees block your view? Human logic tries to map the forest using old memories. God provides a compass. His Spirit leads the way. Rejection of self-reliance feels difficult at first. Humans love control. We want to hold the steering wheel of our lives. Giving the wheel to God brings true freedom. This freedom allows you to walk without fear.
Your journey through the provinces of life will have challenges. Sometimes the dry season lasts too long. Sometimes the floods come. During these times, human understanding whispers: give up. Faith speaks: stay the course. God holds the waters in His hands. He knows the needs of every village and every soul.
Walking the Straight Path
Lean on the promise found in the Word. Proverbs 3 promises a directed path. This promise means God clears the brush. He levels the ground. He makes a way through the thick jungle of confusion. You only need to follow. Total trust requires total surrender. Abandon the pride of knowing better than your Father.
The world offers many lies. These lies promise success through greed. God’s Word promises success through obedience. Trusting God remains the only foundation for a stable life. When you stop leaning on your own understanding, you finally stand on solid ground.
