The culture around you will tell you parenting is about safety, opportunity, and happiness. God’s Word tells you something far bigger is happening. You are not just raising a child. You are stewarding an eternal soul.
Children Are a Gift From God: Understanding the Biblical Foundation
A Heritage, Not a Burden
Psalm 127:3-5 makes the foundation clear: “Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb is a reward. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior, so are the children of one’s youth. Happy is the man who has his quiver full of them” (NKJV).
The word “heritage” carries real weight. A heritage is something passed down with intention, something valuable enough to protect and invest in. God is not assigning you a burden. He is entrusting you with something He considers a reward.
That changes everything about how you approach the hard days. When the sleepless nights pile up or the teenage years feel impossible, you are still holding a gift from God’s own hand.
Arrows Are Aimed, Not Just Launched
Notice the image God uses: arrows in the hand of a warrior. An arrow does nothing on its own. It requires a hand that knows where to point it. Your role as a parent is to aim your child toward God, toward truth, toward a life of faithfulness.
That aiming is not accidental. It is deliberate, daily, and rooted in God’s Word.
The Command That Comes With the Gift
God gives the gift, and God gives the instruction. Deuteronomy 6:6-7 connects the two directly: “And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up” (NKJV).
This is not a command reserved for Sunday mornings or formal Bible lessons. It is woven into the ordinary rhythm of each day. Meals, walks, bedtime, morning routines: all of it becomes the classroom for faith.
Christian parenting, at its core, is this: receiving children as God’s gift and then pointing them back toward the God who gave them.
Training the Next Generation: What God’s Word Commands
God does not leave parents guessing. His Word gives clear, direct commands about how to raise children, and two passages stand at the center of Christian parenting.
Start Early and Stay Consistent
Proverbs 22:6 says, “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it” (NKJV). The Hebrew word for “train” here carries the idea of dedicating something to its purpose. A child trained toward God from an early age is being shaped for the life they were made to live.
This is not passive. It is not simply hoping children absorb faith by being nearby. It is active, intentional instruction repeated day after day, in ordinary moments and difficult ones alike.
Do Not Provoke Your Children
Ephesians 6:4 gives a two-part command: “And you, fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord” (NKJV). The first part is a warning. Harsh discipline without grace, constant criticism without encouragement, and rigid rules without relationship can harden a child’s heart rather than open it.
Paul wrote this to fathers specifically, but the principle applies to every parent. Authority in the home must be exercised with love and self-control, reflecting the character of the Father who disciplines those He loves (Hebrews 12:6).
Bring Them Up in the Lord
The second part of Ephesians 6:4 is the positive command: bring children up in the “training and admonition of the Lord.” Training speaks to correction through experience. Admonition speaks to instruction through words. Together, they paint a picture of a home where God’s truth is both taught and lived out.
Christian parenting is not about producing well-behaved children for the sake of appearances. It is about forming hearts that know God, love His Word, and walk in His ways. That work begins with you, and it begins today.
